The Last Days of Big Grassy Fork by Hunter James,
The Last Days of Big Grassy Fork recounts newspaperman Hunter James's attempts to save his 100-year-old family farm family entertainment industry and homestead from extinction. Wise, irreverent, pugnacious, family entertainment industry and often hilarious, James fights back against the galloping urbanization of his beloved North Carolina piedmont. Interweaving current affairs family entertainment industry and family history, James details the growth of the Winston-Salem area as a center of Moravian piety family entertainment industry and later as the world's largest tobacco manufacturing center. This personal history shows he is not the only James to have had a difficult time fitting in with the neighbors' idea of progress; his family's trouble in the Piedmont began early. In 1904 his grandfather was flooded out of a brothel in his birthday suit, family entertainment industry and he later scandalized the local Baptist church with drunken sermons, exposing the dark secrets of the congregation. James's unique sense of the absurd, family entertainment industry and his willingness to play the fool, make for entertaining reading as each of his efforts at preservation fail miserably. He accidentally torches a neighbor's barn in an attempt to burn off his best pasture land, as was always done in the past; he squanders enormous amounts of money vainly trying to save his farm by becoming the Piedmont's preeminent lord of the manor, vintner, wine snob, family entertainment industry and horseman; family entertainment industry and he finally seals his own doom when in alliance with his neighbors he inadvertently creates the "world's largest garbage pit". The book ends with an eloquent plea for a true Agrarianism in the modern South, for the need to strike a balance between the call for industrial expansion family entertainment industry and the desire to preserve the land.

On Coon Mountain: Scenes from a Childhood in the Oklahoma Hills by Glen Ross,

On Coon Mountain: Scenes from a Childhood in the Oklahoma Hills by Glen Ross,
Coon Mountain lies in the Cookson Hills, where the western edge of the Ozark Plateau reaches into eastern Oklahoma. A part of the Cherokee Nation during Indian Territory days, it was home to a rural community mostly of white family entertainment industry and Cherokee farmers by the time Glen Ross was born there in 1929--which could have been 1829, for all the difference twentieth-century industry had made. These autobiographical essays tell us what was special about the rural Americans of the Great Depression family entertainment industry and World War II--about their resourcefulness, humor, family entertainment industry and love of the land. How with a minimum of technology, in a subsistence economy, they achieved a life-style family entertainment industry and a stature in the eyes of their children that we envy today. Glen Ross's lucid, appealing narratives pull us back into a time when children picked corn, peaches, strawberries--whatever was in season--and trapped animals, when a woman had to make hominy beginning with seed corn grown on the farm, family entertainment industry and men met the challenges of horse-drawn equipment as they farmed, hunted, family entertainment industry and fished to eke out a living with their families. We have in this book vivid pictures of doughty pioneer relatives family entertainment industry and their bygone way of life, including the well-stocked general store kept by Ross's kindly storekeeper uncle (who spoke Cherokee as well as English), a remote mountain homestead abandoned to the encroaching wilderness, a missionary meeting in the midst of a summer thunderstorm, family entertainment industry and an eerie midnight raccoon hunt in once-familiar woods transformed by darkness. As Ross grew up, the depression deepened. The family traveled five days in a 1936 Chevrolet to Oregon to escape the hard times, only to return a year later to their homestead. Their battery-powered radio toldthem of the war in Europe, even as it entertained the women with the early-day soaps. Eventually, war work was to draw the family out of the hills family entertainment industry and into the second half of the twentieth century. Readers will laugh as Ross contrasts Coon Mountain with the rest of America.
